well this sucks, but I kinda thought this would happen, the rampage board is dead. It powered on few a few seconds then made a pop and shut off. I recalled having problems with it in the past so I will have to get a new board. Is there any obvious damage on the board? might be able to get it fixed. Those are getting hard to come by and the prices on ebay are insane...
Vin
No visible damage, but I didn’t look all to hard. From what I could recall the board was getting very finicky before I retired it so who knows. I’ll give it a closer look later on.

Part 12: I love ebay's very poorly made search algorithm. So I found a x58 classy with a motherboard block and i7-990x on eBay. The listing would not come up if you search for the board and I found it by digging through all the listing in the motherboard CPU combo category. Needless to say I won it for the starting bid! 200$. That's not a bad deal for the board alone, but with a 990x and motherboard block too yeah that's nuts
Sellers photo of the board.

That's a great deal. Do you know what version it is? They had a number of them. the earlier models need a hard mod to support x series XEON's. but if it's the latest one (770) then you just need the last bios and all CPU's in the x58 lineup are supported.
I love mine, 10x more settings than a Gigabyte X58A-Series and way more settings than I know what to do with.

I agree - Should at least be possible to fix the board rather than just toss it. I'll admit it depends on what is wrong with it but certainly can't hurt to look and see if you can't find what went wrong and go from there.

However it looks to be the later classified 3 model. The e770 if I recall.

the e770 is what I have, the latest bios has never given me any issues... You made out like a bandit then at $200 with that CPU.
in my location, that board is going for no less than $350 and that CPU in the $100 range...

Vin True, but I'm not really going to use it all that much for benching, my days of hardcore benching are long behind me. Given my heath the last thing I want to do is start a dice run and have a flare up and have to leave the pot unattended. Air cooling benching is not all that fun outside of low end hardware witch I do very much like benching over high end stuff. I been tossing around the idea of getting a good p45 board to bench older GPUs and cellys again. But I know the second I do this I'll get sucked back into it and never have a life again lol.
And you aren't kidding on the price. were I live the board alone is 250$ish USD, the CPU 100-150$ USD and the block is icing on the cake.

I didn't see the photo yesterday. that's a nice block. mine has the stock NB massive air tower..
Would be cool if you'd bench, but not if you'll never have a life.. lol... We're a free team here... Bench what you want, when you want with what-ever cooling you want...

Pity you could of been a good addition to the team. Indeed. I’d love to get back into benching, but I have a hard time concentrating on certain tasks anymore with my stomach/GI problems. Constantly being in pain, in and out of the bathroom with brain fog makes life hard. Stress is a major contributor to some of the issues and the last thing I need is stress from working late trying to push clock speeds and scores higher. Im a gluten for punishment and don’t know when to stop and step back from things sometimes.

Maybe some day, but for now I'm doing good to get through the work day.
Anyway the week end is near so I'll be testing the 1000w PSU I bought and start to come up with a plan on the wires.I was thinking of cutting holes in the motherboard tray to run wires behind it, anther thought is to use/make a cable race way down the front of the motherboard tray.

should be getting the classy today. Can't wait.
I also did not get any wiring done. I installed the PSU and that was it. I been having more stomach problems and wasn't up to it.

Part 13: x58 classy.
Here she is. I took the block apart and its not flaking but worn down in a lot of spots and copper is showing. But it looks like all the bad platting it gone now so I'll leave it be. The rest of the blocks in the system are bits power blocks so there isn’t anything in the loop that can clog if more flakes off.
Part 13a: EK at its finest. EK to this day still amazes me how they can fugd things, even simple things. And somehow folks still flock to there crap tier products like they're the best.
Take a close look at the motherboard block, real close. do you see it ? I do, it covers part of the CPU heat sink mounting zone. look at the lower left CPU mounting hole area. Yeah the block is ever so slightly inside the white line and I had to cut the mounting bracket on my CPU block in order to get the block to fit.
Anyway I started to put the system together and have a GI flare up and had to call it quites early, but I should get the system up and going tonight. I still need a sli cable and some sata cables too but I should at lest get it powered on tonight

I'd personally take the block apart, soak the o-ring/seal in cold distilled water and Dove dish soap (at least 24hrs). The rest of the metal bits I'd soak in CLR (Rust, Zink, Calcium remover).. The rest of the plastic stuff I'd use a nylon brush and distilled water to get any other potential crap off of it.
what ever they used as a coolant, even if it's ok stuff, once dried can make a mess of things in your loop.
Thats what I would do if I got that setup used.

I was planning to change the coolant and tubbing size at a latter date. When I do that Ill get new rings and re do the tim/pads on the motherboard block. The coolant I’m using dose a grate job at lubricaing rings anyway

Part 14: it’s together and making si-fi sounds. Ok now for a odd one. The system makes a very odd sound at times. Its like something super high voltage charging up and discharging over and over again. But its not high pitched but rather mid/low pitched. Almost like a electric motor revving up. I unplugged all the fans and pump and it’s still making the sound. It goes away and comes back. Its not coming form the PSU ether. Im rather confused as what it could be. Other then that it’s working fine so far. Edit. It seemed to stop making the sound hopefully it doesn’t come back but if it dose ill be sure to record it.

Part 15: More parts needed and a scam. So the x-fi I bought off ebay was a scam and the seller is being investigated by ebay and possibly usps. He tried to pull a rather cleaver scam that involved the item being sent back to him. Ebay's automated system sees the tracking says delivered so I automatically lose the item not received case. I was able to get a refund tho, took some work but in the end I got my money back. For now I'll just be using the good old sound blaster live. Anyway I have more parts I need to get. When I bought the fans and rad I had a sk939 250gts sli setup in mind. That would have had far less heat in the loop and now I don't think the 500/800RPM fans and slim rad will cut it. But I also don't want to get higher RPM fans or a bigger rad. So what can I do? well a little know trick for a fully water cooled system is to have every case fan in the system pull air into the cas. That pushes a tick more air through the rad. So I'll bet getting two more 80mm fans and 3 40mm fans to install next to the PCI slots. I know its not much but even in the bios the air being push out the rad is warm. I also need to get some heatsinks for the back sides of the 285s. The bitspower blocks do not have coolant passing over the VRM area wile wile the block makes contact with the VRMs its does not do much to cool the VRMS. The back side of the PCB gets rather hot even in the bios, aside from modding the blocks to allow coolant to pass over the VRM area I can't seem to think of any other options to lower the VRM temps. Down the road I want to get different fittings and bigger tubing, when I do that I look into modding the blocks to pass coolant over the VRMs.
Part 15a: better cable management. I need to re run the cables in the system to make them look cleaner. Right now the cables right of the motherboard are all twisted and mangled and don't look at that clean.
I think I swap the blue zip ties for black ones wile I"m at it.

I've always found fans smaller than 120mm have a whine to them. So I've always steered away from them if my goal was a silent system. for 120mm fans, I can vouche for the Noctua NF-P12 redux-1700rpm (PWM) fans. they run as low as 450rpm and push a good amount of air.

I'm not the biggest fan of Noctua fans, more so the price. Scythe kraz flex fans fans are very comparable for close to half the price. But I sure do like their rubber fan mounts. Only ones I ever used that don't snap apart when installed or dry-rot with age.
Ether way the 80mm and 40mm fans I'm getting are both under 20dba and I used them before so I know they aren't too loud. TBH the hdds are louder then anything in the system, I found out that they were making the odd revving up sounds. They probably don't know what to do without sata cables attached to them.

ah, that's the thing with these, they are the budget versions. I got mine for $18ea Canadian.... the regular ones were near double that cost.
Here is my Fan stats that I created when shopping for Fans on my current build.. I needed 10 fans and didn't want to go wrong or over pay.

Here in the states its about a 6$ diffidence between the Noctua and scythe fan. I know that's not much but it adds up fast when you need more then one or two fans.
Nice chart by the way.

A nice build project there austin86! Hope you find an optimal airflow through the case and water cooling combo there. HDDs in a group spinning, create some heat as well. That small card btwn the GPUs, that is an audio card I guess.

I was thinking of swapping the HDDs for SSDs but since I'll be using raid-0 (or maybe 1+0) and windows xp I can't see SSD being the best option long term.

Part 16: Its about time amazon. So I bought the sata cables I needed from amazon and by mistake I had them shipped to my PO when I made the order. Now for those that don't know if a order is to be sent to a PO amazon will delay shipping it by a week or two at times. I switched the address on the order and hopped it would ship out sooner. After a week I canceled it and reordered with my home address so now the deliver ETA is about 2 weeks sooner lol. I should get the cables tonight. The irony is that my home mail is forwarded to my PO so I'll still get it at my PO.
