It's overkill, this much I can tell you HP z820 workstation...no overclocking with these 2600 series xeon chips. EDIT: CPU z reports quad channel memory but its actually octal channel memory effective that has a bandwidth of about 100GB/s

Good shit. Glad I'm in the right state of mind for this one! Mods want to split this tangent off? LOL. Label the thread... critque my rig... and let the mud slinging begin, lol!!!! 1. It's ideal for my uses. I explained that... but your reply and mine from 10 mins prior must have crossed paths. 2. If you look at the Intel ARK site for my processor, you would see that its base clock is 2.8 GHz and boost (for 2 cores) is 4.2 GHz. All core boost is 3.6 GHz. That said, I've overclocked 900 MHz from the stock all core boost...25%. Not bad for a 2.5 year old processor. So, while your advice may be prudent say, for today's AMD Ryzen chips (where unless one can actually use all cores, PBO overclocking is better) and perhaps today's Intel (which most all can overclock all c/t close to or past stock boost, all past their all core boost), it certainly isn't with my CPU and where I have ended up, nor is it in most other examples not named AMD. I'm also not at all concerned about power or heat mitigation differences. Who buys a Lambo/Ferrari and complains about the fuel costs?! Yep, a bit useless to talk about chips that weren't released... Moving on, I had a 7900x (which was fine for my needs) and then a vendor replaced it with a 7960x because their board killed it. I didn't have a choice in the matter. So... sure, if I had a choice, and the money, I would have gone with the higher core count chip, because... why not? Had I waited, lol...there is always something better around the corner. Why didn't you wait for the 10th gen CPUs? Silly talking point, that. Also, IIRC, that CPU was sold at auctions to select partners. There isn't even one on ebay right now! I'd also be losing 2c and 14t, but, in all fairness that wouldn't be painful. Well, good times. Glad you picked at my CPU! Fun exercise. EDIT: x265 4k (defaults, untweaked) was almost 24 fps. CPUz is 7956 / 544. This is in 16/16t config 4.5 GHz (daily driver settings).

Jesus all those chips mentioned within 100mhz of each other are performing within 2% performance difference lol. Even my 8700K (14nm ++ - a plus then add some +++'s here and there, 5ghz they all nearly the same IPC lol. 7700K is no slouch at 5ghz even. It's like peeling the skin off a fuckin apple or something. Dude (earthdog - mainframeR) you literally just gave me permission to critique your build a couple hours back! Why are you now surprised that I am doing just that? But you have to keep in mind these are not the only options available. earthdog could have gone for a much more powerful dual CPU layout which at that time would have curbstomped his single socket CPU in terms of brute performance. It seems he has a pretty deep pocket when it comes to computer equipment. This puts a number of superior chips on the table that he could have chosen instead... a practice I like doing (as in mutli-processing), but with older processors, so I try to keep my server acquisition costs under $1000 per unit if I can help it. But dont let me get near ebay or amazon with my debit card in hand. lol. I loved the Phenom II silicon so much I had to get my hands on some of the last AMD 45nm Opterons. The Opteron 6180 SE vintage to be exact. So I have a couple Dell c6145s in the basement rack.... Matter of fact I have 192 cores at my disposal. Obsolete but a classic nevertheless, just like the 7960x Heck, even something like the overclockable single socket processor, the Xeon W-3175X would clean house if it was put up against a 7960x

What? No. Multi-core AMD processing in it's day wasn't 45nm Opterons it was 940 pin and NOT AM2. Quad Core Dual Duallies man. That was porocessing horse power. Asus K8N-DRE. Oh remember that well. Back when pin mods where still a thing. Yeah, something like K8 Egypt cores. No the s939 pin mods didn't work. Had to read the pinout and figure out on my own. And no, there's not a tutorial either.
192 cores though? I'd wonder what the PPD in F@H would be hmmm.

NightRanger, LOL, you're a trip. I'm not surprised in the least (what even made you say that? lololwut?)! I got a kick out of it, that's for sure! W-3175X... what a beast! It's also a $3K processor that isn't on X299 (the EVGA overclocking board for it costs $1K too IIRC). Again, great suggestion, but I didn't have a choice in this situation...nor does that CPU benefit me in any way. Again, why didn't you wait for 10th gen or get the 9900K??? Exactly. What's good for the goose has to be good for the gander! You do understand the difference between what is going on here, right? You posted a thread showing off your wares and asking for help in some parts... nobody in this thread said anything about the processor choice or anything. But answered questions and corrected some theories and other mis-steps that were made (not plugging in the pump and plumbing it backwards). That's all. You just want to tear up my build because, spite. No skin off my back! Please continue on if it makes you feel better! Ty. It's...... a beast. I'm extremely lucky to have landed something like this. If I wasn't lazy, I'd flip HT on and break 10K on the multi test in CPUz... maybe hit 30 FPS in x256 4k. Who knows. I

Both you guys crack me up. Usually it's AMD vs Intel, not Intel vs Intel XD
Meh Cpu-z. What's the Wprime times? (I like legacy numbers. Usually accurate.)

I will always have a soft spot in my heart for the K7 lineage, though unfortunately no multi processor support there. Specifically, the Barton core Athlon XP that ran at 400MHz FSB. These were some of the earliest AMD processors to run at that bus speed. That's why I have respect for the Athlon XP 3000+... but that being said, just the 400mhz version not it's 333mhz red headed step child equivalent. Remember the A7N8X? That certainly was a classic. I have acquired an A7N8X board that's likely repairable - I just need to get the capacitors replaced and I can fire up my barton core 3000+ chip....

2x M.2 NVMe drives (OS / Games, DL and processing) You should have chosen the Samsung 850 Pro, hands down. Wasn't that the fastest M.2. nvme drive available on the market in 2017 ish? That's with the assumption your nvme drives are generic since you didn't include a manufacturer... It's not intel and it's not amd. It's not storm chaser and it's not earthdog... So who is the unrivaled king of horse power? It's this guy. Whos got veins in his biceps that are bigger than some anorexic womens arms are all the way around. What a beast! Not sure what type of gear he is on but I want some of it

If I wasn't lazy, I'd flip HT on and break 10K on the multi test in CPUz... maybe hit 30 FPS in x256 4k. Who knows. I Its obviously a beast. Just not the best beast of the day. There is always something better, in sharing this, and in conversation of last night (lol), I am hoping you are coming to realize how fruitless and irrelevant (and rude?) it is to go forward and criticize other people's builds as your default modus operandi around the forums. It wont earn you too many friends, that's for sure. So yes, I do understand exactly whats going on here... I am putting you in the shoes of your "victims" (lol) and I have noticed, you are kinda getting a little defensive here... not so fun when the roles are reversed, is it? You can dish it out but you can't take it? Not surprised in the least. See, there you go again! I think we have a perception problem here. I don't need your help to build my computer, lol. Having never installed a pump and having no directions (pump came direct from China) I had no idea what power requirements were needed/required. I made the false assumption that the included molex power connector was a non PWM alternative power point. Seriously, nobody should be using molex connectors in 2020. Yeah, 1981 was cool, but the interface has worn out it's welcome. They could have and should have run the power delivery through a sata power connector.. because that's the most plentiful power connection.. Also, simply going on the sheer number of 120 mm fans I've gone through over the years, many had the identical pigtail at the end for power pass through or non PWM power source. So after seeing about 90 fans with an identical pigtail pass through, I was lead astray when I applied these concepts to a liquid cooler pump. And it wasn't plumbed wrong. It benched CPUz at 5300 MHz Kinda funny, all these guys screaming and demanding the res must be placed before the pump in your loop order. LOL and not a single one of them have seen an AIO? Just what kind of world are we living in? And yes, while I do this to show off my hardware, but my primary purpose is not done out of pride. It's done because I like documentation. I like to chart and record all of my builds this way. So it's as much for me as it is for you (well, not you specifically, because you came here to nit pick and pester like a small ankle biter) but you get my drift, right? I like to go back and revisit some of the older builds from time to time and it's nice to have high resolution photos and remember each step I took along the way to get there.... I think what a lot of people dont get about you is that ( Russian accent) you are slick operator, bordering on manipulation tactics on multiple levels. (End Russian accent)

I will always have a soft spot in my heart for the K7 lineage, though unfortunately no multi processor support there. Specifically, the Barton core Athlon XP that ran at 400MHz FSB. These were some of the earliest AMD processors to run at that bus speed. There was absolutely multi processor support. I have overclockable dual processor socket A boards and a boat load of benchs for proof. So does Bones for that matter.

I was putting emphasis on the processor itself (the Athlon XP 3000+) And AMD did a hell of a job back in the day against Intel. If memory serves me correct this was a very competitive chip when compared with Intel offerings of the same vintage. In any event it looks like this thread has run its course.
