I bought my very first telescope, it being an 8 inch Newtonian Reflector type. Got it, opened the box and immediately was like "Houston - We have a problem" due to the damage it sustained in shipping.
I bought it from a seller on fleabay and after contacting them they asked for further pics of the damage to file a claim against the shipper (Fed Ex).
Apparently the pics were enough that Fed Ex payed out - I got refunded over half of what I payed for it making it a cheap telescope.
After doing some research I discovered I did over pay a little for it, not badly but in the end it worked out - Esp since after all that I discovered it was missing some pieces! Had to get creative and make the missing parts for it plus repair the damage done too. As of this post I'm waiting for the eyepieces to arrive that I ordered and then I can test it.
Here's some of the pics of it, I'll have more later on what I did to repair the damage and replace the missing pieces to it.

I've always been fascinated by such and wanted one for a long time now but prices were expensive. Turns out the type I have can be made as a DIY project easily, just takes time to get it done right. If I have to replace either mirror that will negate the good deal I got with it since mirrors are a big part of the cost of getting one, yet you can get them. When I ordered the eyepieces I made sure to get a few different sizes, one being an adjustable magnification piece (That helps) plus some viewing filters too.
I believe the next one I'll have I'm gonna make myself.

Have some pics of what I did to fix the damage and create what was missing. The one with the top of the mount has plates stacked up, these being normally used for wood in a home's construction but were perfect for this. Had to stack them so I would have a mount for the tube that would not flex.
Had to create a rod for the counterweight to go onto.
Had to create a plate for mounting the scope itself to it's tripod so it's legs would stay in place.
And this is what I did to repair the secondary mirrror holder, the extra piece is the same as what was used for the fix and is there as an example.

That's a nice looking newt OTA.... I'd love to get my paws on a newt at some point (specifically the Orion Astrograph 8" f4) but I'd rather not lug around a big heavy beast. Downside of no backyard or car means you have to carry it all to wherever you're going, and it's a 40 minute walk to the nearest observatory grounds.
Is that a equatorial tracking mount, or an alt-azimuth mount?
I'm slowly working on saving up for a StarGuiderPro (with William Optics mods) as well as a William Optics Red Cat, and eventually want to get my hands on a ZWO ASI1600MM and filterwheel to go with it... Won't lie though, I'd love to get my paws on a Celestron 8" RASA with the same camera on a Celestron CGX mount, but that definitely is not something I'm carrying around.

No idea about the mount - TBH I barely know anything about it period except that I fixed it. It's all new territory to me.
Still have some adjusting to do with the mirrors I know (Ghosting of the image going on) but it's working which is a much better situation than before.

I'm guessing alt-azimuth, which works more than fine for observing/visual, especially with that nice big tube.
All I have right now is an entry level Meade 400mm f6.7 if I remember correctly. Dad surprised me with it a few weeks ago.

Haven't had alot of time with it, some work on getting all the optics aligned needs to be done but not bad overall.
