I've been contemplating moving my 2700X into my HTPC.
Been getting complaints of lagging by my kids with some particular games they run.
The swap out parts as follows...
R5 1400 to 2700x A320M-K to ROG B450-I Gaming. GTX 760 to GTX 980
Basically trading my daily driver. Probably nothing else, not even them memory. Though I should.
Hardware wise, this will be a vast improvement.
Thinking of doing this because I've already squeezed out my fun with my main rig, I don't typically game much.
I'm interested to see the platform running on Windows 10 and how the operating system handles the cpu, I use W7 for a daily driver.
Sounds like fun. Should keep me busy a couple hours, I have this Saturday off!! yay.

What Ram and SSD/HDD are you running in there? is it a wired or wireless network?

also what games are they playing? cause the CPU should be plenty and 2GB of ram on an HTPC should do 1080p just fine..

It's 16gb Cosair 3000mhz (usually at 2133) It's a Wired Lan connection The TV is 4K though.
I figure just do a system swap out lol. Thinking the GTX 760 is just not up to the task. My duaghter Sims 4 issues. My youngest Beam NG Drive has lag.

The HTPC has SSD, I can't remember exactly what model off my head. I'll have to open the case to jogg the memory lol,

Hi Vin, Thanks for the replies.
A follow up here - \ 2 SSDs Sandisk drives and a WD Blue.
I did only swap the video card after cleaning the dust from the filters case and such. Amazing how much that front panel collects.
We saw major improvements in video quality, but yet still lower frame rates. I guess Beam NG Drive is a lot more recourse heavy than I had ever thought. lol.

ya, if the TV is 4K then a GPU with 4-6GB of ram would be warranted for just movies. then you add the 3d on there and the 980 is a good choice.
OS on an SSD is also a huge benefit.. the WD Blue is fine for file storage, watching a movie and generic stuff shouldn't be an issue. as for games, I'd see about having them on SSD's. depends on how the game cache works, might see a benefit there as well

Movies seemed ok with the GTX 760 actually. Never had any issues streaming.
I see dips of below 30 FPS with Beam NG Drive as he plays it. All settings on highest x4 AA.
Can't overclock the R5 1400 though. I think this is holding the GPUs back a bit.
Thinking to upgrade the cpu maybe a Ryzen 2600/x. 100 bucks roughly. Better ipc and higher clocks should do the trick ya think?

though that 1400 being a quad with HT, I was surprised to see that it would hold back a 980...

Thanks for that link. Yea, it's only a 3.2ghz base clock. Didn't pay a lot of attention to the clocks during gaming, more so the FPS. I'll look closer at the figures of Cpu usage and such, see what clocks it's running. Got a stock cooler on it. Quad pipes does a fine job of keeping the cpu cool. The issue is I can't OC the A320 chipset. I'd wonder if someone could mod the bios and unlock some features. Believe me, this would be easier than tearing the rig completely out for a new mobo and as such is the reason I did not do that today. It's not a standard tower case, so the mobo sits mid case on it's back. I like the set up though, just a pain to tear down and rebuild.

Jon, Before you do all that, Snag a Intel pro Gigabit NIC. If the board your on now has Realtek LAN, it's more than likely the problem.

The game BeamNG-Drive isn't online based, it was running on the 4K TV (we recently upgraded from 1080P) and the game was lagging from the GTX 760. Only swapped the video cards and it seemed to make a world of difference luckily. Although Roblox seems to lag, but not sure if that's just game engine or the Nic card, but that's an excellent suggestion. I'll try and find one for cheap enough to try it out.

Finally did it. Swapped the A320 chipset and R5 1400 for the B450-I gaming and 2700X. Traded 980 for a 2060. Which I intend to perhaps set to fold when idle. (with my family, it may only fold at night time lol) So the Cpu will run hotter than the old one, and the Gpu should run cooler.\ The 2700X is de-lidded and using Thermal paste. The stuff Scotty sent me, IC Diamond everyone says is crap. Gonna be honest, it's a mother fucker to spread, but it does a really decent job transferring thermals, I care about that most. Will hopefully see how it does on air cooling with higher ambient temps being stuffed in a cabinet. Installed a top fan which is a few inches away from the Cpu heat sink. I've installed 3 Deltas in place of the locked up Raijintek case fans that came with the case. Phew though. That was quite a bit of work. Complete dismantle!

That's pretty much I was doing when the storm came. Had to leave it in pieces while visiting the basement for a short while XD.

Temps look ok so far. 72c at a load (cinebench short runs) which is just dandy. After the paste settles in in about a day or two, the temps should be down a couple c lower.
So far it seems faster having much better per core epeen. Even though I'm aware of it, see the kids reaction is sweet stuff though. When they notice a difference, that makes it very enjoyable. Should last a couple of years I think without needing new parts.

Totally agree with you. Works good, cocksucker to spread. Only other complaint is that it's so abrasive, it takes all the writing off the lids.

Yeah, just need to get the stuff warm and it'll spread fine. Lightly attaching the cooler, getting it hot then cinching it down the rest of the way gets full coverage every time.

When I remove IC Diamond I use brake cleaner to get the dark grey stain off of heatsinks and lids. Man that stuff is serious.

It does seem to take the etching off after multiple uses/wipes. Looks like when the paste is wiped off it does the most damage, not from actually using it between surfaces.

That rear case fan touches the Cpu heatsink fan. Not enough to push it, but touching.
I need to get a controller. The Rear Case fan on the AIO pump header just goes full blast. And it's funkin louder than a 747 at takeoff. lol.
Seems to run cool without the rear case fan. But do want to get it turning just because.... The bottom exhaust fan is working. That one wasn't locked up XD
EDIT: Forgot to mention the kids like the RGB glow on the ROG board lol. Go figure.
